Introduction to Marciac
Located in the southern region of Gers along the D3 road, Marciac is not just a historical bastide founded in 1298 but also a vibrant center for jazz enthusiasts around the globe.
The Jazz Festival
Since its inception in 1978, the JIM… Jazz in Marciac festival has become a celebrated cultural event, attracting over 100,000 visitors each August for 12 days of unparalleled jazz experiences. Held in a large, specially constructed tent that accommodates more than 6,000 spectators, concerts are also hosted in the town’s market square and arenas.
A Historic Venue
The town is home to a remarkable 14th-century church featuring four clocks and a striking 85-meter tower, the tallest in Gascony. The craftsmanship of its wooden carvings and the wrought ironwork from the 18th century adds to its charm.
Jazz Legends in Marciac
Marciac has welcomed numerous jazz legends over the years, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Stan Getz, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Ray Brown, Lionel Hampton, and Oscar Peterson, solidifying its reputation as a premier jazz festival in Europe.
The Birth of a Jazz Museum
Due to the festival’s rising fame, a museum named Territoires du Jazz was established to commemorate the genre’s history. Visitors can explore jazz through immersive sound, images, and artefacts, such as the trumpets belonging to Bill Coleman and the bronze hands of Stéphane Grappelli.
Education in Jazz
The success of the festival has also inspired the creation of a jazz school, where Wynton Marsalis plays a pivotal role by leading tutorials and mentoring the local orchestra of students.
