Exploring Eauze
Eauze, located just 15 kilometers from Fourcés, has a rich historical background that spans over two thousand years. The name Eauze is derived from Elusa, which translates to the capital of the Elusates tribe. This tribe, alongside their allies the Sotiates from Sos in Lot-et-Garonne, bravely resisted the Roman legions led by Julius Caesar and Crassus. Interestingly, this suggests that Astérix’s origins are rooted not in Brittany, but in Gascony.
Historical Significance
It was only after the demise of Vercingétorix that the Elusates acknowledged Roman dominance. The term « Elusate » is linked to « illiberri, » meaning « new town,” and thus, ancient Elusa—present-day Eauze—emerged as the capital of the Roman province known as Novempopulanie.
Archaeological Treasures
Eauze is home to two remarkable archaeological finds:
- The first, a significant collection unveiled in 1985, consists of over 28,000 coins and jewels unearthed during excavations near the railway station, where previous discoveries included Roman steles and Gallo-Roman pottery.
- The second was an accidental find made by a farmer plowing his field, which included mosaic fragments, marble, and remnants of Gallo-Roman structures.
